The Big Buddha at Ngong Ping
The 34 m bronze Tian Tan Buddha on its three-tier altar, Po Lin Monastery below, and new terrain carrying Lantau on to the west.
The Tian Tan Buddha now sits on its hill at Ngong Ping on Lantau Island. Finished in 1993, the 34 m bronze Buddha was five years old in 1998, and it is now a landmark you can fly out to in free flight.
The statue and the altar
- The Buddha: seated on a lotus throne, about 34 m tall, in dark bronze. The right hand is raised and the left rests on the lap, and the statue faces north.
- The altar: three round tiers modelled on the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, each with a white balustrade.
- The six devas: small bronze figures kneeling round the altar with their offerings.
- The steps: a straight flight down the north face of the hill to the plateau.
- Po Lin Monastery: red-walled halls under yellow tiled roofs on the plateau below.
The Buddha is floodlit at night, so it glows on the dark hills of Lantau.
More of Lantau
The sim's terrain used to stop just west of Lantau Peak. A new patch of terrain and aerial imagery now carries the island on to the west, so Ngong Ping, Lantau Peak and the hills to Tai O are all there. It meets the old terrain without a step, and the edges fade into the sea.
To visit, take off in free flight and head west-south-west, about 30 km from Kai Tak. The top of the statue is about 500 m above the sea, so keep well above it: it is a solid obstacle like any other.
