The car park moves to the landside of the terminal
A long, stepped car park beside the terminal, with footbridges, the clock wall and the spotters' crowd on its roof, as in the 1990s photos.
The multi-storey car park has moved. It now stands where it did in 1998: on the landside of the passenger terminal, between the terminal and Prince Edward Road, running alongside the terminal and joined to it by covered footbridges. The clock and the big HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT KAI TAK sign have moved with it, onto the car park's end wall, and the plane spotters crowd the roof above them, as in the period photos.
Where it was, and where it is now
Before, the car park was a square block off the far end of the terminal, out by the tank farm. The photos and the Kai Tak model tell a different story: a long, stepped building on the north side of the terminal, parallel to it, with the road on its other side. The new car park is about 300 m long and has two sections: a taller one toward the maintenance area and a lower one toward the runway. Stair and lift towers rise on the terminal side, and three footbridges cross to the terminal wall.
The clock wall
The clock and the airport sign, in English and Chinese, were on the end wall of the car park, not on the terminal itself. They are there now, facing the runway end and the road that runs past it.
The spotters' roof
The roof of the lower section is where the crowds stood. Cars park over most of the deck, but the runway end is kept clear and full of people, thickest along the parapets. The car park is now taller than the terminal, so from the roof you look out over it, across Kowloon City and the IGS turn, and down the apron to the runway. The stairwell head with its exit and caution signs is still there, behind the crowd.
Try this
Start Plane Spotter and choose Car park roof from the Plane spotter menu, or press C until it comes up.
