Flight 605: the 747 wreck at the runway end
An optional 1993 scene: a 747-400 with a crushed nose against the seawall, its tail under the water and its fin cut off.
Fly Kai Tak can now show the wreck of Flight 605, the 747-400 that ran off the end of Runway 13 on 4 November 1993 and came to rest in Victoria Harbour. It is an option on the home screen and it is off by default, because the jet was not there in 1998.
Where it lies
The jet touched down well along the runway, overran the far end through the approach lights and slid off into the harbour. It came to rest facing almost the opposite way to its landing direction. The sim puts it at the end of Runway 13, just left of the runway line, with the nose up on the seawall and facing back toward the runway.
What the sim shows
- Partly under water. The front of the fuselage is clear of the water, the wings and inner engines sit at the surface, and the rear fuselage is under it. The cabin stayed above water while the passengers got out, and the jet sank tail first.
- No fin. The vertical stabiliser was taken off with explosives soon after the accident, because it interfered with the ILS signals for Runway 31. The sim leaves a ragged stump.
- A crushed nose. The nose and the first-class cabin were damaged, so the nose is pushed in, drooped and twisted.
- Churned water round the hull, and a duller finish than a flying aircraft.
- Boats stay clear. Moored vessels near the wreck are hidden while it is on.
How to see it
On the home screen, tick Flight 605 wreck, November 1993 under the options. The wreck appears at once behind the menu. Start any flight and it is there at the end of Runway 13, in every mode. A Runway 31 approach passes right over it.
A note on the sim. The wreck is modelled from published accounts of the accident, so its pose and damage are close but not exact. As with every aircraft in Fly Kai Tak it carries no airline name, logo or livery.
Fly Kai Tak
