New: giant billboards and neon over Kowloon
Floodlit hoardings on the airport road and glowing neon signs, visible from the IGS at night.
Hong Kong in the 1990s was lit by its advertising. Kai Tak now has giant floodlit billboards on the rooftops and roadsides under the approach, and building-sized neon signs that glow at night.
Billboards on the airport road
Large hoardings stand on rooftops and on poles beside the roads around Kowloon City, Kowloon Bay and the approach. They face the road or the incoming aircraft, have steel frames and catwalks, and are lit by rows of floodlights at night. They are kept under the approach clearance, so none sits in your flight path.
Neon
Three rooftop signs are drawn as glass tubes: a watch face, a red electronics wordmark and a restaurant and night club sign. By day they are pale, unlit tubes. At night they glow with a bright core and a halo. The projecting shop signs on Nathan Road and the other main roads are bigger, more of them are neon, and they glow too.
No real logos
The brands are made up: an electronics maker, a soft drink, a whisky, western-style jeans and boots, colour film, a car, a watch and a night club. They use the era's styles but no real logos, like the rest of the signs in the sim.
