Harbour shipping follows the fairways
Ships now sail one way along the charted fairways, keeping right, and most of the harbour's vessels are moored or at anchor.
Ships in the harbour now go somewhere on purpose. Moving ships follow the real fairways and traffic separation schemes from the Marine Department charts, and most of the rest of the harbour's shipping sits still, moored or at anchor.
One way, keeping right
- Lanes follow the Victoria Harbour and Lei Yue Mun fairway, the Ma Wan and Western Fairway, the Castle Peak Fairway, Rambler Channel and the East Lamma Channel scheme
- Each fairway has a lane each way, and ships keep to their starboard side, so the two streams pass port to port
- Ships never turn round: they sail the length of the chart and re-enter at the far end
- Freighters, container ships, liners, junks and yachts use the lanes; junks and yachts keep to the outer edge
Most ships are going nowhere
- Container ships and freighters lie alongside the Kwai Chung side, with tugs, and others swing at anchor in the western anchorages, all facing the same way
- Junks, yachts and launches are moored along the shore in Kowloon Bay and Causeway Bay
- Moored ships show anchor lights only and leave no wake
- Star Ferries still cross between their piers, and tugs, launches and police boats still roam
