Kowloon Walled City, rebuilt from photographs
The Walled City is now one packed block of interlocking buildings, with balconies, aerials, rooftop shacks, shop signs and lit windows at night.
Kowloon Walled City is no longer a field of loose boxes. It is now one packed mass of interlocking blocks, with balconies, aerials, rooftop shacks and shop signs, drawn from period photographs. You see it as the jet turns onto final over Kowloon City.
One solid block
The old model scattered separate boxes inside the walled area. The new one fills it in rows of blocks that touch on every side, so from the air the Walled City reads as a single mass with a ragged skyline. The outer blocks run 10 to 14 storeys. A few lower, older blocks sit inside. The whole thing stays under the 44 m roof cap, so it is still the same collision volume you can hit.
Walls with something on them
Every outer wall is now covered in the things the photographs show: small windows on narrow storeys, cage balconies, air conditioners, painted and stained patches and rain streaks. Enclosed balconies and add-ons bulge out of the walls, and open shopfronts line the ground floor.
Signs over the street
Shop signs hang flat on the walls and stick out over the street at right angles. The vertical ones are printed on both sides. They carry real shop words in Chinese, such as dentist, pharmacy, noodles and clothes cleaning, on red, yellow, blue and white boards with no real brands. They are lit at night.
The roofs
The roofs carry forests of TV aerials, water tanks, plants and shacks of timber, tin and plastic sheet, and low sheds stand along the foot of the walls, most of them on the south side. The aerials are the part you notice first from the cockpit.
At night
Most windows show tube light in green, white and warm yellow, the shopfronts glow along the street, and the signs light up. From the approach at night the Walled City is one of the brightest patches on the Kowloon side.
Before 1994, or the park
The Walled City was demolished in 1993–94, and by 1998 the site was a park. The home screen option Kowloon Walled City as it stood before 1994 is on by default. Untick it for the 1998 park instead.
