Public housing estates in bunches

Cross, Y, twin-tower and slab blocks now stand in matching groups, with pastel facades and rooftop tanks.

Hong Kong's public housing came in a handful of standard blocks, built in bunches to one design. The sim now builds its estates the same way.

Blocks that match

The map's building footprints are not tagged, so the sim looks for groups of four or more similar, mid-sized tall footprints standing within 75 m of each other. Each group becomes an estate. The central business districts, Mong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon City keep their tenements, so the street scene under the approach is unchanged.

  • Harmony and Cruciform: a cross plan, the most common shape in the 1990s.
  • Trident: a Y plan with three wings.
  • Twin Tower: two square towers, one taller than the other, in the older estates.
  • Slab and Linear: long, narrow blocks on the tighter sites.

One estate, one look

Every block in an estate shares a height class (roughly 16 to 22 floors in the older estates, 28 to 35 for Trident and Cruciform, 34 to 41 for Harmony) and a pastel scheme, with a few blocks in a second shade. Heights still stay under the approach clearance, so the autopilot lands in every weather preset as before.

The facade has a window on every bay, an air-conditioner under many of them, a stair and lift core every eight bays and alternating panels. At night the windows light up in warm and cool white, and the stair cores glow a steady green-white.

Try this

Fly the Runway 31 approach or switch to Spectator, then look at the hillsides of Kwun Tong, Wong Tai Sin and Kwai Chung for the bunches of matching blocks.
