The real road network, as it was in 1998

Traffic now drives the Transport Department's surveyed road centrelines, with every road built after 1998 taken out.

West Kowloon in 1998: an empty reclamation and one new expressway.

The traffic now drives the Transport Department's own road centrelines instead of lines traced off a map picture. Roads that were built after 1998 have been taken out, so the network is the one you would have flown over in the last year of Kai Tak.

Looking south-west over Yau Ma Tei at the bare West Kowloon reclamation, with the expressway running down its edge and Hong Kong Island across the harbour.
West Kowloon: the reclamation is still empty, with only the 1997 expressway and the harbour crossing on it.

What changed

  • Accurate roads: every main road follows the surveyed centreline of each carriageway, joined through the junctions into long runs.
  • No tunnels on the hills: tunnel sections are left out, so traffic no longer drives over Lion Rock or across the harbour on the water.
  • Kowloon City streets: the streets under the approach come from the same data, which also places the shop signs and the asphalt there.
  • Street lights: spaced a little wider, since each carriageway now has its own row.

Taken out for 1998

  • Route 8 (Tsing Sha Highway and Stonecutters Bridge, 2008 to 2009).
  • Tsing Yi North Coastal Road and Hung Hom Bypass (1999).
  • Central-Wan Chai Bypass and the roads on the Central Reclamation Phase III and Tamar waterfront.
  • Everything on the Kai Tak site: the new streets on the old apron and runway.
  • The West Kowloon Cultural District streets, Cyberport Road, and streets first recorded after 2009, such as the Anderson Road estates.
Over Kwun Tong looking west: the Kwun Tong Bypass along the waterfront, the runway across the typhoon shelter and the harbour beyond.
Kwun Tong and Kowloon Bay: the bypass and Kwun Tong Road, with nothing built on the airport side.
Kowloon at night from above Lion Rock: lines of street lights tracing the main roads to the harbour and Hong Kong Island.
At night the street lights trace the 1998 main roads.
