The Regal Kai Tak Hotel, rebuilt from photos

The airport hotel across Prince Edward Road East now has its real L-shaped plan, glass bands, brick ends, podium terrace and name.

The hotel across Prince Edward Road East from the car park has been rebuilt from photos and a roof plan of the real building, the Regal Kai Tak Hotel. It now carries its own name, 富豪啟德酒店, down the end wall and REGAL KAITAK HOTEL across the podium.

From over the car park: the road face, the named end wall and the footbridge.

The shape

  • Plan: a long slab along the road with a wide wing running back to Sa Po Road at its north-east end, and both ends cut at an angle, as on the roof plan.
  • Tower: continuous bands of dark tinted glass and brown spandrels on every long face, solid brick end walls with a column of small windows, and a deep brown cornice.
  • Podium: brick, with a dark glazed band over the shopfronts, the hotel name across the road face and a planted terrace along the road.
  • Roof: flat, with plant units and a round tank.
Looking straight down on the hotel roof: a long arm along the road and a wider wing at one end, the footbridge crossing the road to the car park.

The footbridge and the night

The covered footbridge now meets the podium near its north-east end, as in the photos. At night the rooms light up at random and the name on the end wall and the podium glows.

The hotel at night: scattered warm and cool lit windows, the hotel name glowing across the podium, the footbridge in the dark.
At night: lit rooms and the glowing name.
