Where the sun and moon really were

The sun and moon are placed for Hong Kong's latitude on an early July day in 1998. The sun rises in the east-north-east, climbs almost overhead at noon and sets in the west-north-west. The moon is a waxing gibbous that rises in the afternoon and sets before dawn, and the stars turn around the pole as the night goes on.

Light that follows the sun

Sky colour, fog, sunlight and the water all change with the sun's height. Low sun is orange and the sky glows along the horizon, then fades to blue by day. The sea picks up the glitter of the sun by day and of the moon by night, and the clouds turn pink at twilight.

Lights come on at sunset

Windows, street lights, neon signs, runway lights and aircraft lights switch on when the sun drops below the horizon, and off again at sunrise. So the Dusk preset is a mix: a glowing sky with the lights already on.

The moon has a phase

The moon is a disc with a lit side that faces the sun, and a faint glow on its dark side. You can see it by day too, when it is up.

Fly Kai Tak
