The Peninsula Hotel and its rooftop helipads
The 1928 building round its forecourt, the 1994 tower and its two green rooftop pads, rebuilt from period photos.
The Peninsula Hotel on Salisbury Road has been rebuilt from period photos. The old placeholder boxes are gone. In their place is the 1928 building round its forecourt, the 1994 tower behind it, and the tower's two rooftop helipads, where the hotel's S-76 waits for the harbour tour.
The 1928 building
Two cream wings run forward to Salisbury Road on either side of the forecourt, joined by the central block with the entrance canopy and THE PENINSULA over the door. There are tall windows with pediments, corner quoins, a heavy cornice and an attic floor, and an arcade of arched shopfronts at street level. Blue-and-white striped awnings run round the forecourt and the street fronts. In the forecourt, the hotel's green Rolls-Royce Silver Spurs are parked round the fountain. (The Phantoms did not arrive until 2006.)
The 1994 tower
The tower rises behind the old building, built in the same cream style. A dark glazed bay runs up the middle of its long faces, and two big arches sit in the crown under a deep cornice. A podium in the same style fills the back of the block. The tower's roof is about 101 m up, and the old building is about 33 m.
The rooftop helipads
There are two round green pads on white drums, and they overhang the roof. Pad No. 1 is to the south-west and No. 2 to the north-east. Each pad has a yellow touchdown ring, the pad number on both sides, a 07t weight limit, yellow approach dashes and THE PENINSULA round the edge. Pad No. 2 also has an H. A green-and-white safety net runs round each rim, and green lights mark the edge at night. The hotel's S-76 now parks on pad No. 1 and lands back there at the end of the scenic tour.
At night
After dark the whole building is floodlit gold. Windows light up across the wings and the tower, with lamps along the cornice, headlights in the forecourt and red obstruction lights on the roof.
To see it up close, take the Harbour helicopter tour from the home screen. It starts and ends on pad No. 1.
