Help us build the inside of the Kai Tak terminal
We are asking for glTF models of Kai Tak assets and photos of the terminal, so the interior and the rest of the sim can be as authentic as possible.
Fly Kai Tak has the terminal outside: the pier, the stands, the jet bridges, the main block and the car park. It does not have the inside yet. To build the departure hall, check-in area, gates and arrivals hall the way they really were in 1998, we need your help. If you have 3D models or photos of old Kai Tak, please send them in.
glTF models of Kai Tak assets
We would like 3D models in glTF 2.0 format (.glb is easiest, .gltf with its textures also works) of anything that belonged in or around the terminal:
- Check-in desks, baggage belts and trolleys
- Departure gate lounges, seating, glass walls and escalators
- Arrivals hall, immigration and customs counters
- Signs, ceiling panels, light fittings and flight information boards
- Shops, cafes and kiosks of the period
- Airside vehicles and equipment we have not built yet
Keep models light: low-poly with baked or simple textures runs best in a browser, and a single model under a few megabytes is ideal. Please give the real-world size in metres, and say if the model is based on a particular part of the terminal.
Images to make the sim authentic
We also want pictures. Photos, scans and plans help us get the colours, materials, signs and layout right, and they can become textures in the sim:
- Interior photos of the terminal: halls, gates, corridors, ceilings and floors
- Signs, floor markings, wall graphics and information boards
- Apron, pier and jet bridge details from the stand side and the air side
- Views from the terminal windows toward the runway and Kowloon Bay
- Floor plans, elevations or construction drawings of the terminal
- Surfaces for textures: carpet, tiles, panels, ceilings and glass, shot flat and evenly lit
Tell us where and roughly when a photo was taken, and which part of the terminal it shows. A note on the direction you were facing is a big help. Large originals are better than compressed copies.
How to send them
Email [email protected] with the files or a download link, or open an issue at github.com/Ragnahhhhrock/flykaitak/issues if your files are small and you are happy to share them in public.
Only send what is yours to share: models you built, photos you took, or material with a licence that allows reuse (CC0 or CC BY are ideal). Say who should be credited and we will credit you. Please do not send ripped game assets or other people's photos without permission. The sim uses invented brands, so we will not put real airline names or logos in the finished terminal.
Every contribution is checked before it goes in, and not everything sent will be used. Thank you to everyone who remembers Kai Tak and wants to help bring it back.
